Community of Practice for Africa
The Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Community of Practice is an innovative initiative brought to life by the Africa Sickle Cell Organisation (ASCO), in partnership with the World Coalition on Sickle Cell Disease (WCSCD). We are dedicated to transforming the landscape of SCD care in Sub-Saharan Africa by fostering open dialogue and collaboration between adult patients living with sickle cell disease, healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers.
SCD is a major health challenge across Sub-Saharan Africa, affecting millions of lives with severe complications and limiting the life expectancy of those diagnosed. Despite its prevalence, SCD has not received the level of attention or resources needed to effectively address the myriad of challenges it presents to patients and healthcare systems alike.
Adults living with SCD in Sub-Saharan Africa face daunting barriers to receiving proper care. These range from a lack of specialized healthcare providers and poor transition from pediatric to adult care, to economic burdens that limit access to necessary treatments. Additionally, the widespread stigma and lack of awareness about SCD exacerbate these challenges, hindering patients' quality of life and survival.

Develop a proceedings report and publication to share and utilize insights gained from our convenings to advocate for informed policy changes and improved healthcare delivery practices.

With each virtual convening and published article, we are building a foundation for a more informed, inclusive, and effective approach to SCD care. Our year long initiative is just the beginning. We envision a future where every individual with SCD in Sub-Saharan Africa has access to the care, support, and resources they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
